SUMMARY:Chenh Vossa — End of Buddhist Lent 2026
DESCRIPTION:Chenh Vossa marks the end of the rains retreat. For three months the monks of Siem Reap have remained within their pagodas, and on the full moon of the eleventh lunar month, that restriction lifts. It is a day of relief, gratitude and considerable celebration.\nThe retreat — Vossa — has a practical origin. It began in the Buddha’s own lifetime, when monks were asked to stay in one place through the monsoon rather than walk the countryside and trample the young rice. Two and a half thousand years later, Cambodian monks still keep it: from Chol Vossa in July until Chenh Vossa in October, they stay put, study, meditate and teach. In 2026 the retreat runs from 30 July to 26 October.\nOn the day itself, laypeople come to the pagoda from early morning with food for the monks. There is chanting, a sermon on what the retreat has meant, and the ceremony of Pavarana — in which the monks formally invite one another to point out any fault committed during the three months. It is an act of humility, and it is the true business of the day.\nChenh Vossa also opens the door to the season that follows. From the very next day, the twenty-nine days of Kathen begin — the robe-offering festival, when each pagoda in the province receives new robes and gifts from the community. So this is not an ending so much as a hinge: the retreat closes, and the most generous month of the Khmer year opens.\nThe day is observed at every pagoda across Siem Reap province — in the city, and out through Banteay Srei, Puok, Prasat Bakong, Sotr Nikom and the villages of the Tonle Sap. Visitors are welcome. Dress modestly, remove your shoes before entering the vihear, and arrive in the morning if you want to see the offering.
