Annual Meak Bochea
Meak Bochea is the quiet counterpart to Cambodia’s louder festivals — no parades, no boat races, no fireworks. It commemorates a gathering that, by tradition, nobody arranged: 1,250 of the Buddha’s disciples arriving at the same place on the same day, unsummoned, to hear him teach. It is a day about coincidence, community and restraint.
The day falls on the full moon of Meak, the third month of the Khmer lunar calendar — usually in February, occasionally at the end of January. Cambodia calculates it by its own reckoning, so the Khmer date can differ by weeks from Makha Bucha in Thailand or Myanmar. It was removed from Cambodia’s list of official public holidays in 2020, but the observance itself was untouched: the pagodas fill regardless.
Across Siem Reap province the pattern is the same in the city and in the villages of Banteay Srei, Puok, Prasat Bakong and the Tonle Sap communes. People rise early to give alms to the monks. Through the day there are sermons and the taking of the precepts. And after dark comes the vien tien — the candle ceremony — in which the congregation walks three times clockwise around the vihear, each person carrying a lit candle, three sticks of incense and a flower. One circuit for the Buddha, one for the Dharma, one for the Sangha.
It is worth going for the last of these. A rural pagoda at dusk, with a slow ring of candles moving through the dark and the sound of chanting behind it, is one of the more affecting things you can witness in Cambodia — and almost no visitors are there to see it.
Dress modestly, remove your shoes before entering the vihear, and if you join the procession simply fall in behind someone and follow. Photography from a respectful distance is generally fine; never use a flash during chanting.
Because Meak Bochea follows the Khmer lunar calendar and is no longer gazetted as a public holiday, the exact date of the next observance is not yet confirmed. It is expected in February 2027. This page will be updated as soon as the date is announced.
