Aerial Yoga — Aum Yoga Center
Aerial Yoga — Aum Yoga Center
Aerial yoga is the one class at Aum Yoga Center that people book specifically to try. You practise inside a fabric hammock suspended from the ceiling — sitting in it, lying back in it, and eventually hanging upside down in it — which turns familiar shapes into something closer to play.
The hammock takes your weight, so inversions that would take years to build on a mat become available almost immediately. Hanging inverted decompresses the spine and, for most people, is the most enjoyable part of the hour. The rest of the class uses the fabric as support for balance and stretching, and as resistance for strength.
No previous experience is needed, and beginners are welcome — but the hammocks are limited, so pre-booking is required. Wear something that covers the backs of the knees and the armpits; the fabric can chafe. Avoid a heavy meal beforehand for reasons that become obvious once you are upside down.
Aum runs aerial yoga twice a week: Thursdays at 6:00pm (with Malou) and Saturdays at 9:30am (with Yasmine). $15 per class. It is one of the very few places in Siem Reap with a rigged aerial studio.
Aum Yoga Center is on Preah Norodom Sihamoni Street, inside TUI BLUE Angkor Grace, a few minutes from the Angkor park gate. Booking: 012 508 218.
