Profile
Bayon Temple is a stunning temple located in the heart of Angkor Thom, the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire, in Cambodia. Built in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII, Bayon is renowned for its distinctive and massive stone faces that adorn its towers. These faces are believed to represent either the king himself or the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, symbolizing compassion. The temple’s architecture is a blend of both Buddhist and Hindu elements, reflecting the religious transition of the time. Bayon is famous for its intricate bas-reliefs, depicting scenes of everyday life, historical events, and religious stories. Its surreal appearance and the hundreds of faces make it one of the most iconic and mysterious temples in the Angkor complex.
