October 15 is Commemoration Day of the King’s Father, a national public holiday in Cambodia honoring the memory of His Majesty King-Father Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk — statesman, musician, filmmaker, and the towering figure of Cambodian national identity. He led Cambodia to independence from France in 1953, navigated the country through decades of turbulent history, and remains a revered symbol of sovereignty and unity. He passed away on October 15, 2012, and the date has since been observed as a national day of remembrance.
In Phnom Penh, official ceremonies are held at the Royal Palace, where monks chant prayers and dignitaries pay tribute. In Siem Reap, the observance is quieter but felt throughout the city. Government offices and many businesses close for the day. Flags are flown at half-mast. Residents visit local pagodas — particularly Wat Bo and Wat Damnak — to light incense, offer merit, and pray for his continued peace. The atmosphere is respectful and reflective.
For visitors, this is one of Cambodia’s more solemn public holidays. You won’t find street festivals or public spectacles. What you will find is a glimpse into how Cambodians hold their history with genuine reverence — a quiet but meaningful day that offers real cultural insight if you’re paying attention.
If you’re in Siem Reap on October 15, consider visiting Wat Bo or Wat Damnak in the morning, when offerings and prayers are most active. Some restaurants and cafes catering to tourists will remain open; the Night Market and Pub Street area may operate on reduced hours. Check with your accommodation for any closures or changes to planned activities.
Dress modestly if you plan to visit any pagoda or government area — covered shoulders and knees are appropriate. Photography near pagodas during prayer time should be done discreetly and with permission. A small donation at the temple is always appreciated.
